About

UC Berkeley’s Chancellor’s commitment to re-imagining campus safety includes the creation of a team of integrated behavioral health providers to serve as first responders in wellness checks and mental health crises in an effort to reduce the role of police in mental health calls.

Our co-design involves engaging key stakeholders and community members. Co-design of this program involved the Independent Advisory Board, a student partner, affinity groups, and campus and community partners.

Purpose of Campus Mobile Crisis Response:

  1. Provide a mobile crisis response to support individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis on the UC Berkeley Campus.

  2. Reduce visits to the Emergency Department, including unwarranted involuntary hospitalizations.

  3. Facilitate de-escalation that centers individual's autonomy through trauma informed and culturaly responsive practices.

  4. Provide a person-centered behavioral health response that seeks to reduce stigma and remove barriers to accessing mental health care.

  5. Reduce risk of law enforcement interaction in non-violent mental health crises among students by utilizing appropriate interventions aimed at increasing a sense of safety and agency.

  6. Increase collaboration among community and campus partners to facilitate student’s wellbeing through connection to campus resources.
